Efficacy and Safety of Misoprostol Administered Rectally Compared with Oxytocin for the Prevention of Postpartum Hemorrhage

Background: The foremost cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in third-world countries is Post-Partum Hemorrhage (PPH). To prevent PPH, often Misoprostol used. This study aimed to find out the efficacy safety profile when administered rectally comparison oxytocin, avoid incidence PPH. Methods: quasi-experimental on n=72 patients were performed at Ziauddin University Hospital Karachi for 6 months (2021). divided into two groups. Oxytocin (10 IU) was intramuscularly Group A(n=36) while 400ug given group B(n=36) rectally, time delivery. level hemoglobin checked admission 24 hours after delivery side effects also monitored. Chi-square t-test applied between both groups a p-value <0.05 taken as significant. Results: average duration third stage labor 5.3 minutes versus (Syntocinon) 3.75 (p= 0.012). decrease blood loss quantity not significantly different (p=0.766, 0.203) respectively. effect shivering seen B 4(11.1%) (p=0.04) hyperthermia observed 2 (5.6%) (p=0.151). Conclusion: proved be efficacious oxytocin PPH prevention. Therefore, can likely help during labor, especially with developing healthcare setups.
